MANATEE COUNTY – Florida Highway Patrol announced one person died after the car they were traveling in caught fire as a result of a crash in Bradenton Thursday evening.

The deadly crash took place as a 38-year-old man from Bradenton was driving a sedan with an, as of yet unidentified passenger, heading north on 27th Street East south of the intersection with 26th Avenue East.

At 8:06:00 PM, for reasons unknown the sedan swerved off the roadway and crashed through a fence, then struck a pedestrian crosswalk sign, before finally colliding with a utility pole.

After crashing into the utility pole the car then burst into flames.

The driver of the car was able to escape and was taken to Blake Memorial Hospital with only minor injuries, however, the passenger failed to escape the vehicle.

FHP has not yet been able to identify the passenger of the vehicle, nor is it yet clear how they lost their life – due to the impact of the crash, or the subsequent fire.

The report states that both the driver and passenger had been wearing seatbelts during the accident.

FHP has stated that the crash is still under investigation.

FHP has updated the report announcing that the driver of the car has been arrested for Driving Under The Influence, DUI Manslaughter, Vehicular Homicide, and has been booked into the Manatee County Jail.

The crash remains under investigation.
