SARASOTA COUNTY – Florida Highway Patrol is searching for the driver of a pickup truck after they fled the scene of a deadly,  multi-vehicle crash at Laurel Road and Interstate 75 in Nokomis Thursday night.

The crash took place as a pickup truck driven by an unknown driver was driving eastbound in the left lane of Laurel Road approaching the intersection with the northbound I-75 exit ramp.

As the truck was approaching, two vehicles that had just exited from northbound I-75 were at the traffic light at Laurel Road.

The vehicles exiting I-75 were a pickup truck driven by a 52-year-old man from Nokomis in the inside left turn lane, and a sedan driven by a 62-year-old man from Miami driving in the outside left turn lane.

Under a green light the drivers of the pickup truck and the sedan proceeded lawfully into the intersection, attempting to turn left onto Laurel Road.

The unknown driver of the pickup truck continued approaching the intersection at speed and failed to stop for the traffic signal and ran the red light.

At 9:12:00 PM, the pickup truck entered the intersection and the front of the pickup truck on Laurel collided with the left side of the pickup truck in the left turn lane.

After crashing into the turning pickup, the red-light runner’s vehicle continued forward and crashed into the sedan, the front of the red light runner’s pickup truck colliding with the right front of the car.

After the double-collision, the red light runner’s pickup truck spun and came to a stop on the eastbound lane of Laurel Road east of the intersection.

The pickup truck that had been hit by the red light runner rotated after the impact and came to a stop partway on the grassy median of the eastbound lanes on Laurel Road.

The sedan came to a stop on the northbound exit ramp of Interstate 75.

After causing the fatal accident, the red light runner fled the scene on foot.

The driver of the pickup truck turning left from I-75 onto Laurel road was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the sedan was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

Both the deceased driver and the driver of the sedan had been wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

FHP is searching for the hit-and-run driver and asking anyone with
information about the crash to contact the Florida Highway Patrol or  Sarasota Crimestoppers.
