SARASOTA – FHP announced that a six-vehicle traffic accident on Interstate 75 north of Clark Road Monday morning has injured at least six people, and completely closed the southbound lanes.

The accident began as a Tractor Trailer driven by a 34-year-old man from St Petersburg was heading southbound on I-75 traveling toward Clark Road in the right lane and approaching stopped traffic near Mile Marker 205.

The Vehicles Involved

Immediately in front of the Semi was a Ford pickup truck stopped for congested traffic in the right lane of I-75.

A Ford sport utility vehicle, driven by a 58-year-old man from Sarasota was directly in front of the Ford pickup truck stopped for the heavy traffic.

An Acura SUV driven by a 79-year-old man from Sarasota was directly in front of the Ford SUV at a stop because of the traffic congestion.

In front of the Acura SUV was a Dodge pickup truck driven by a 30-year-old man from Cape Coral, also at a stop because of traffic.

Directly in front of the Dodge pickup truck was an Izuzu pickup truck driven by a 23-year-old man from Sarasota who stopped for traffic congestion.

The Collision

At 10:22:00 AM, the driver of the approaching Semi Tractor Trailer failed to stop for the traffic jam and collided with the rear of the Ford Pickup truck and causing a multi-vehicle chain reaction of rear-end collisions.

The force of the crash, still propelled by the semi-truck, pushed the Ford Pickup Truck forward causing it to crash into the rear of the Ford SUV driven by the 58-year-old man from Sarasota.

The Ford SUV was shoved forward in turn, and crashed into the rear of the Acura Sport Utility vehicle.

The momentum of the semi continued and the Acura SUV was propelled forward into the back of the Dodge Pickup truck.

The Dodge Pickup truck was knocked forward where it collided with the rear of the Izuzu pickup truck, and all six vehicles finally came to a stop.

Injuries From The Crash

Four of the drivers including, the driver of the Ford pickup truck (the first struck by the semi), the driver of the Ford SUV, the driver of the Acura SUV, and the driver of the Dodge pickup truck were seriously injured in the crash. The driver of the Izuzu pickup truck suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer who caused the crash sustained only minor injuries.

FHP has not yet released information about the driver of the Ford pickup truck, or any information about passengers that may have been involved in the crash.

Fallout From The Truck Accident

Southbound Interstate 75 was completely closed as emergency service crews worked to provide treatment, investigate the crash and clear the wreckage.

Florida Highway Patrol diverted all I-75 southbound traffic off the highway onto Bee Ridge Road, where detoured traffic could then travel south on the secondary roads, and reenter I-75 at the Clark Road entrance.

FHP has stated that charges are pending and that the crash is still under investigation.
